Children
ran into waters off Waikiki on January 24th to retrieve a cross thrown in by
our bishop, Metropolitan Gerasimos. The ritual was part of the Orthodox Christian
service of the Blessing of the Waters, celebrating the Baptism of Jesus in the
Jordan River. This Holy Day, known as Theophany (Epiphany) is celebrated in
Orthodox Churches annually on January 6th.

Maia Petrides, foreground, retrieved the Cross in the first throwing (for 8-13
year-olds) and Demetri Nicholas brought in the Cross in the second throwing,
for teens and young adults.
Following
celebrations and inspiring words from His Eminence at water’s edge, a buffet
luncheon was enjoyed by all at the Hale Koa Hotel, with nearly 200 faithful in
attendance. Visitors this year came from as far away as the Pacific Northwest,
Vancouver, and Calgary, Canada.

Guest Speaker at Sts Constantine & Helen
In September of 2010, our Outreach Committee brought Orthodox writer and lecturer Matthew Gallatin to Honolulu to speak to us. Those in attendance at either of his talks - "Worship in the Early Church" on Saturday evening, Sept. 18 and "Oneness in God," the next morning following Divine Liturgy - will attest to Matthew's skill as an inspiring speaker. His 2005 book Thirsting for God in a Land of Shallow Wells has received acclaim throughout the Orthodox world and is available at our bookstore.
To listen to some of Matthew's talks, "Pilgrims from Paradise," visit: Ancient Faith Radio.
